The True Meaning of Karate

An ancient art, Karate attempts to instill in its practitioners a sense of morality, dignity, and self-respect, along with physical development and mental well being. Regardless of the age of the practitioner, this true spirit of Karate enables us to develop respect for our fellow man by physical and mental growth, and most importantly, to develop a perfection of character.

Since the karatekas' constant pursuit is directed toward the perfect control of mind and body, our whole attitude is based on peace and harmony with others, and we will never advocate or look for trouble. When we have true confidence in ourselves, we can be polite and respectful of others, and do not have to show off. We can act with humility and dignity. Physical strength and mental energy can be used for constructive causes, such as helping others and improving society.

Sustained by a sense of pride, self-respect, and inner-peace, we strive for victory over our own weakness. To conquer fear, to know true honor, and develop the courage to refuse failure is the real goal. The respect that we seek is our own. The victory that we seek is to conquer ourselves.
